Vehicle shipping prices are determined by distance, vehicle size, transport type, seasonal demand, and carrier availability. Click any factor below to learn exactly how it affects your quote.
A cross-country shipment from New York to Los Angeles will cost more than a regional move from Atlanta to Charlotte. This is straightforward — more miles means more fuel, driver time, and operational cost for the carrier.
An F-350 extended cab takes significantly more space than a Honda Civic, which means fewer total vehicles fit on the load — directly affecting what the carrier can earn per trip.
Over 90% of all vehicle shipments use open transport — the multi-car trailers you see on highways. Open carriers hold 8–10 vehicles, are widely available, and offer the most competitive pricing.
The Florida, Arizona, and Southern California corridors see dramatically increased demand as retirees and seasonal residents move vehicles south in the fall and north in the spring.

Honest answers to the questions customers ask most before booking their first shipment.
For the vast majority of standard vehicles — sedans, SUVs, trucks — open transport is the most practical and cost-effective choice. Move to enclosed transport if your vehicle is valued over $50,000, is a classic or collector car, or has modifications that make cosmetic damage especially costly. Use the expedited option only when your timeline is genuinely rigid.

American Auto Link is a licensed FMCSA transportation broker (MC #1610585). We do not own or operate trucks. Our role is to source, vet, and dispatch independent licensed motor carriers for your shipment. This model gives you access to a larger pool of carriers than any single carrier company, resulting in better pricing and faster availability.
Federal regulations generally prohibit the transport of personal property inside vehicles being shipped on a commercial carrier. If a carrier permits limited personal items, they are typically restricted to the trunk, must not exceed 100 lbs, and are not covered by carrier cargo insurance. We strongly recommend clearing your vehicle entirely.
Transit time depends on route distance. Short hauls (under 500 miles) typically take 1–3 days. Mid-range routes (500–1,500 miles) typically take 3–5 days. Cross-country shipments typically take 7–10 days. Expedited service compresses dispatch windows but does not always reduce in-transit time. All dates are estimates — the auto transport industry does not guarantee specific delivery windows.
Before signing the delivery Bill of Lading, inspect your vehicle thoroughly and note any damage in writing directly on the BOL. Take time-stamped photos. Do not sign without noting damage. Contact us within 24–48 hours at support@americanautolink.com and we will provide the carrier's insurance information to facilitate your claim. Claims must be filed directly with the carrier within 7 days of delivery.
We recommend booking 5–7 days before your first available pickup date to allow adequate time for carrier matching. However, same-week and next-day arrangements are possible on high-demand routes with our expedited option. Peak seasons (May–September, snowbird months of October–November and March–April) have higher demand — booking earlier secures better pricing and availability.
